Sweet! Akron/Family coming back to town
A few years ago, I did a story on a fantastic indie band — Akron/Family — that came through to town, playing The Pilot Light. The band’s 2007 album, “Love Is Simple,” remains a staple on my iPod; the songs “Ed Is a Portal” and “There’s So Many Colors” are hedonistic in their wild abandon, just primal and ferocious and exuberant.
Turns out, the band is headed back to town. Got this e-mail from Dead Oceans, a PR firm that handles a lot of Secretly Canadian clients, the band’s label:
Akron/Family will bring their transcendent, engaging live show to the Southern United States this February. “Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free,” the band’s 2009 LP triumph, continues to be Akron/Family’s bold new chapter in their always-evolving and ethralling sound.
Akron/Family’s live spirit is best described by Time Out New York:
This “everyone’s invited” attitude is the crux of Akron/Family’s performance philosophy, and it seems to work; word-of-mouth enthusiasm about its live show builds like a grassroots movement. Auxiliary brass, audience-participation percussion, the occasional impromptu parade into the street, all while managing to play the songs that fans want to hear – small wonder these shows are some of the only occasions when you can literally witness 200 New Yorkers smiling in unison.
