Speaking of new music … a roundup of free mp3s as of Thursday, June 2, 2009

Man. We’re so grateful to all of the artists who have allowed us to give away free music. It’s an eclectic mix of bands, mostly local, and we hope it whets your appetite for getting out and supporting all of the amazing artists we have in East Tennessee.

The most recent — singer-songwriter Matt Urmy, who releases a new album, “New Season Comin’,” on Friday night, June 3, at Barley’s Taproom in Knoxville’s Old City. We wrote about him in this week’s Weekend section, and for a limited time, he’s allowing us to give away a honky-tonk flavored track from the new record: “Cry Freedom.” It’s good, good stuff.

Free music! Download these mp3s from Melungeons and Teenage Love13

Man, we’re always so very grateful for the local bands that give us their blessings to provide you, the readers, with free downloads. This week, in honor of this weekend’s show …

060609_02

We proudly present free songs from Melungeons and Teenage Love13! Both are vehicles for the bizarre, frightening and mostly kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll shenanigans of Rus Harper, East Tennessee’s version of Iggy Pop. We wrote about Teenage Love13 back in March, when we did a very cool podcast episode on the band and had some killer original photos of Harper and bassist John Sewell. And we wrote about Melungeons — featuring guitarist Bill Irwin of Blount County, son of the late, beloved Daily Times reporter Anna Irwin — in late 2006.

Melungeons and Teenage Love13 perform at 10 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at The Pilot Light, 106 E. Jackson Ave. in Knoxville’s Old City. Admission is $5. Check out both bands on Myspace: Melungeons here and Teenage Love13 here. And by all means, stop by Harper’s “Dog Hair Manor” site for all sorts of macabre goodness.

P.S.: The wedding referred to in the above poster — “The freak getting married, Paul Wise, was a member of Teenage Love and Evil Twin as well as 3 Ring Psychosis,” Harper writes.
